TAMKO Building Products, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of residential and low slope roofing products, composite decking and railing products, waterproofing and cements and coatings. With nearly 75 years in the industry, TAMKO’s success is a direct result of teamwork and enduring relationships with customers, suppliers and employees.

The company continues to be independently-owned and operated by the third generation of the company’s founder, preserving the same values and principles of years past.

TAMKO began in 1944 in a streetcar barn in Joplin, Missouri. TAMKO’s philosophy is simple – work hard, do your best, be fair and honest, and believe in those around you. Company-founder E.L. Craig created the TAMKO line of roofing products on that foundation. Starting in the 1960s, under the leadership of Jay Humphreys and Ethelmae Craig Humphreys, TAMKO became a national leader in the industry, expanding into Kansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Maryland and Texas.

Under David Humphreys’ leadership TAMKO has expanded further with new plants and innovative building products including TAMKO’s MetalWorks® Steel Shingles in a variety of styles and colors, all featuring a unique four-way locking system for easy installation and UL classification for wind resistance; and composite decking and railing products that feature the look of real wood, including EverGrain® and Envision® decking, and the Tam-Rail® and Marquee Railing® systems.

The Heritage® laminated shingle line is the cornerstone in TAMKO’s residential roofing product line, offering dimension and curb appeal. The Heritage Series includes Heritage®, Heritage® Premium, Heritage® Vintage® and Heritage Woodgate® shingles.

TAMKO’s low slope roofing line includes Awaplan – an SBS-modified polyester roll roofing, base sheets, flashing membranes and more. TAMKO also provides quality cements and coatings for low slope and residential applications and a line of above and below-grade waterproofing products.

Nothing provides homeowners more peace of mind than a sound roof over their heads. For hundreds of years, tile roofs have been considered the time-tested, ultimate roofing system.

The main challenge with tile roofs is keeping the tile secure during wind events. Nothing illustrates this more clearly than the recent damage done by Irma on Marco Island. We were able to survey the damage, see photos at:

This illustrates two roofs that were mechanically fastened, one was not even completed at the time of the storm. The damage is clear, as is the failure mode. Mechanically fasteners must be left a little “loose” or the tile will crack. When the wind blows across the tile, it can lift the end of the tile, causing “chattering” to occur. As the chattering continues, the tiles are literally ripped from the roof, as seen in the ridge tiles hanging on at a 45 degree angle in the presentation.

The mortar example is even worse, these are roofs are likely from well before the updated code requirements took effect.

Finally, we see nearby homes with adhered tile roofs that were subjected to the same wind event and show no damage. Adhesives like TILE BOND™ lock the tiles in place, eliminating the potential chattering- the typical failure mode of mechanical fasteners.

While the cost to use adhesive adds a small premium, isn’t the peace of mind worth it?

There’s a new kid on the residential roofing block. IKO entered the Florida market seven years ago, but has quickly earned a well-deserved reputation for the high-quality architectural laminated asphalt shingles it manufactures.

According to Donna Dove, IKO Sales Representative for North Florida/South Georgia, residential roofing professionals respect and admire that the company is a family-owned and privately held business.

“The IKO Premium, Performance and Architectural Collections available in our market are engineered to meet or exceed our tough Miami Dade building codes,” she says. “They feature built-in blue-green algae-resistance, superior protection against wind-driven rain and high-wind blow-off”.

For homeowners, it’s the stunning color choices that elevate IKO above the rest. Thanks to IKO’s exclusive, advanced blending technology, the company offers homeowners a fine selection to suit any style of home. Deep cuts and dimensional profiles mimic the in-demand look of natural stone tiles or genuine wood shakes, without their expense and maintenance worries.

One of the shingles in the company’s Performance Collection is Dynasty® with ArmourZone®. In addition to more traditional colors, it includes several truly unique and eye-catching color blends.

For residential contractors, Dynasty offers a “true square advantage”. Three bundles cover exactly 100 square feet. Many competitors’ comparable shingles fall short, requiring the purchase of additional bundles to make up the difference. Over the course of a building season, the savings on time, labor and wasted material can really add up.

The rooftop endures more abuse from the elements than any other part of a building’s exterior, so preventative maintenance is critical to prolonging the roof’s service life.  Periodic roof system evaluations are recommended to ensure the roofing system is performing as intended. It is suggested that regular maintenance inspections be conducted by someone specially trained in single-ply roofing installations.  When a roof system is maintained properly, it performs better, lasts longer and provides more reliable protection of the building and its contents.

Versico Roofing Systems has developed professional rooftop evaluation software perfect for creating quick and easy rooftop evaluation reports called True Roof Rater.  The True Roof Rater customizable report features a GPS satellite image of the roof, in addition to comprehensive descriptions of potential performance issues and recommendations.

As we enter into spring, it is a great time to check roofs for any damage caused by winter weather.  Even in warmer climates, Versico strongly recommends regular spring roof maintenance, as damage can be caused by wind or foot traffic from maintenance personnel.  An essential element of a good inspection and maintenance program is proper record keeping and documentation.  Versico recommends restricted access to your roof, in addition to a maintenance log to keep track of who has access to your roof.
