Mike Silvers, CPRC, Owner, Silvers Systems Inc. and FRSA Technical Director - January 2026

I wrote my first column as FRSA’s Technical Director in January of 2018. It was titled " These Are Exciting Times for Our Industry." It discussed not only the damage caused by Hurricane Irma but the many challenges that awaited our industry.

Over the years we have accomplished so many important goals. Through the dedication of our volunteer members and staff, we continue to represent our trade as true industry professionals. In any given year some things remain constant:

■ The development of the Florida Building Code is truly triennial. As soon as the new code is adopted on the last day of the year, a new cycle begins.
■ The need to share code and technical knowledge through seminars, presentations and technical articles on issues that pertain to roofing with contactors, building officials, architects and others is constant.
■ Assisting the Governmental Affairs Committee and our Legislative Counsel during the legislative sessions.

Several items, however, are unique each year. A few examples from last year include:

■ The creation and implementation of a course addressing the changes to the scope of a roofing contractor’s license, which now allows them to perform roof-to-wall connection enhancements.
■ The roll out of the new Introduction to Roofing Technology instructor training course.
■ Beginning the development of the 8th Edition of the Florida High Wind Concrete and Clay Tile Installation Manual for the 9th Edition 2029 Florida Building Code using the new ASCE 7-27 as the basis for the wind uplift resistance tables.
■ The development of a new six-hour contractor training course.

These are far from an all-inclusive list of the issues and items we will be addressing in the coming year. We have accomplished so much together but there is still much work to be done. Happy New Year to all who make this endeavor possible!
